BLUEFIELD – Two goals in a 15 second span helped give the Bluefield College Rams a 3-0 lead at intermission and the BC men's soccer team held off a late charge to claim a 4-2 win over the Columbia International University Rams, Saturday afternoon at the East River Soccer Complex.
Nikolai Solomon put Bluefield on the board in the 13th minute with an assist from Matthew Carragher. Solomon struck again in the 24th minute as he headed Joe Stacey's corner kick into the net to make it 2-nil. A mere 15 seconds later Florian Gleissner made it 3-0 when he found the back of the net with the assist going to Jan Breitensmoser.
CIU, who entered the game with a 4-1 record did not lie down. Daniel Mallard scored CIU's first goal in the 52nd minute. The visiting Rams pressed the action in the second half and drew to within a goal in the 71st minute on Jed Blanchat's goal. Paul Grandacarpio provided the assist.
Bluefield sealed the victory in the 87th minute when Benjy Slator scored on a penalty kick.
The physical game saw five yellow and two red cards handed out.
Bluefield, now 3-3, and winners of three in a row, welcomes Union to the East River Soccer Complex, Wednesday for an Appalachian Athletic Conference match.
