BLUEFIELD, W. VA. -- The Bluefield College men's soccer team defeated Columbia International University Friday evening in the battle between the "Rams" athletic programs, winning 4-1 at the East River Soccer Complex.
BC moves to 4-4 with its second straight win, while CIU took just its second loss of 2013 and is 5-2.
Bluefield wasted little time in taking a 1-0 advantage, thanks to the aggressive play of
Jacob Mader in the 6th minute of action. With a backward pass going to the CIU goalkeeper, Mader pressured Like Brooks and took control after a misplayed touch, going in for the easy score. Mader now has goals in back-to-back games.
The hosting Rams stretched the advantage to 3-0 following goals in the 34th and 36th minutes.
Erik Albarran scored, corralling a loose ball after a corner kick and finding the back of the net. Approximately two minutes later,
Andres Palacio converted a penalty kick--which came following a hand ball in the box.
Columbia International answered in the 39th minute to trim its deficit to 3-1. Abe Vazquez put a breakaway shot passed BC starting keeper
Jefferson Watson after a good lead pass from Daniel Miele in the open field.
Bluefield tacked on one more goal in the first half, as freshman
Wyatt Fagan rocketed a shot from just beyond the box.
The visiting Rams had more scoring opportunities in the second half, but were turned away each time by
Justin Cook, who played the final 45 minutes in net for BC. BC had considerably less shots in the second half, with the game concluding with the 4-1 score.
Bluefield outshot Columbia International 16-9 on the afternoon, with 12 of BC's shots coming in the opening stanza. CIU outshot BC 5-4 in the second half. BC finished with nine shots on target to six for CIU. Both teams finished with five saves--Brooks taking all five in 90 minutes for CIU.
CIU was whistled for 10 fouls to eight for BC.
Bluefield gets back to Mid-South Conference play on Sept. 25, trekking to face the University of Rio Grande. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
