The Rams Softball team was on the road again Saturday taking on Emory & Henry in a doubleheader. BC dropped the first game 8-2 before bouncing back and taking game two 6-5.
BC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after
Kaitlyn Pennington drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a
Morgan Sawyers single. The Wasps answered right back in the bottom of the inning when freshman right fielder, Madison McClanahan blasted a three-run homer over the left field fence. In the top of the second,
Ali Bartley walked, advanced to third on
Michaela Carter's double down the left field line, and scored on a RBI single by Pennington. The Rams were held from scoring anymore after the second inning while the Wasps scored again in the second, third, and fourth innnings.
Baily Garin got the loss in the circle for the Rams. Pennington, Garin, Sawyers, Carter, and
Morgan Stephens all had one hit for the Rams in the game.
Game two showed to be a little more interesting. BC started the first inning off with
Eryn Haley and Garin both collecting singles but the Rams were unable to produce a run. The Rams did not have another baserunner until the sixth inning. The Wasps took the lead in the bottom of the second after scoring one run and then in the third inning, the heart of the E&H order produced four runs on five hits.
Carter singled to leadoff the top of the sixth. Pennington and
Megan Arrington followed suit with singles of their own to load the bases for the three-hole hitter, Garin. With an 0-1 count, Garin sends a shot to left field that bounces off of the top of the twelve foot fence for a grand-slam! BC played solid defense in the bottom half of the inning to come back in the seventh with one last shot to win the game.
Kristen Murphy drew the leadoff walk, and
Kiki Jones was put in to pinch run.
Ali Bartley lays down a bunt, and a collision with the first baseman causes the ball to be dropped and Bartley to be safe. The first baseman then makes a throwing error trying to throw out Jones who was heading for third; the throwing error allowed Jones to score the tying run and allowed Bartley to advance to second. Pennington comes up with two outs and Bartley on second, and hits double to the right center fence to allow the go ahead run for BC to score. The Rams' defense then held off the Wasps in the bottom of the seventh to complete the comeback win.
Brienna Sparks got another win on the mound as she threw the complete game. She gave up five runs on nine hits and struck out 11. Pennington finished 2-4 with an RBI, Garin was 2-4 with 4 RBIs, and Carter was 1-3 with an RBI.
BC is now 5-7 overall and 0-2 in the AAC. The Rams will be traveling the University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky on Monday March 7th for a doubleheader against the Patriots. Game times are 3:00 and 5:00.
