BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Bluefield College Rams football team takes to the turf of Mitchell Stadium once again Saturday afternoon as the NAIA No. 10 Faulkner University Eagles will land in Bluefield for a 1:30 encounter with the Rams.
The Rams are coming off last week's home opener against Point. In that contest Sam Bennett carried 17 times for 106 yards and a touchdown run of 41 yards but Bluefield College fell to the visiting Skyhawks 50-27. Keeping the program in search of its first home victory since football was reinstituted in 2012.
One change expected for the Rams this week is a new quarterback. Cason Whitt is slated to make his first appearance of the year, returning from injury. The first two games of the year saw Terrell Hackney and Damen Daniel share the signal-calling duties. Whitt is a 6-2, 185 pound sophomore from Fredericksburg, Va. He played at Massaponax High School.
Defensively the Rams are led by linebackers Harry Casseus and Ernest Moore and safety Gabe Spencer. Casseus had 12 tackles against point and has 23 on the season. Moore has 18 tackles and Spencer 15. Spencer also had an interception against Point that he returned 12 yards.
Faulkner comes to town with a 1-0 mark, having defeated Southeastern University of Florida 45-33 last weekend in its season opening game. The Eagles are led offensively by quarterback Clayton Nicholas who completed 31-of-52 passes for 376 yards and five touchdowns last week. His favorite targets were Xavier Willis and A.J. Stevenson who both caught six passes. Stevenson and Rob Lockhart each had a pair of TD catches.
The Eagles' ground game is anchored by Joe Jones who carried 22 times for 109 yards.
Defensively Faulkner is led by linebacker Dennis Thames who had 10 tackles. Keith Turner and Ray Smith brought down seven ball carriers each.
It will be Military Appreciation Day at Mitchell Stadium. All active-duty military will be admitted for free. Kickoff in the Mid-South Conference battle is set for 1:30.
