WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Bluefield University football team dropped a non-conference road matchup to the University of the Cumberlands, 66-12, Saturday evening at James A. Taylor II Stadium.

The Rams (1-1) struck first, scoring the game's opening points on a pick-six just over six minutes into the contest. Freshman defensive back Seth Burnham intercepted a pass and returned it 39 yards to the end zone to give BU a 6-0 lead. On the play before, junior defensive lineman Chris Reynolds recorded his first sack of the season.

However, the Patriots (2-0) quickly responded with a touchdown on the ensuing drive, sending the game into the second quarter tied 6-6.

Cumberlands pulled away in the second frame, extending its lead to 31-6 by halftime.

With just over four minutes left in the fourth quarter, freshman wide receiver Marlin Haywood forced and recovered a fumble following a Patriots interception, setting up the Rams at the UC 18-yard line. Two plays later, sophomore running back Rayjuan Traynham scored his first touchdown of the season on a 12-yard rush.

Traynham's score capped the Rams' offense for the evening, as Cumberlands closed out the 66-12 win.

Senior quarterback Ethan Cash finished 11-for-26 through the air with 168 passing yards. Seven different Rams registered at least three carries, with Traynham and sophomore running back Kyree Edwards sharing the team lead at 20 rushing yards apiece. Graduate running back Abdul Kaloko hauled in a team-high four receptions, while Haywood and senior wide receiver Jevon Myers each logged a 40-yard catch.

Defensively, freshman linebacker Chase Harris led the way with six total tackles. As a unit, Bluefield tallied eight tackles for loss, one sack, and one interception.

Following a bye week, the Rams return to action on Saturday, Sept. 20, with a 1:00 p.m. road kickoff at Presbyterian.
