Volleyball splits tri-match, earns first win of 2014

| Box Score 2 1099MONTGOMERY, W. Va. -- The Bluefield College volleyball team put its first talley of the season in the win column, Thursday evening, after splitting its tri-match at West Virginia Tech.

The Lady Rams' evening began with a matchup against Bluefield State College that went five sets. The Lady Blues grabbed a 2-0 lead after edging out BC by margins of 25-22 and 25-19. But, the Lady Rams turned things around in the following two sets with a pair of tight victories, 26-24 and 25-22. In the fifth and deciding set, BSC held the upper hand, 15-11.

Jasmine Morrow led the Lady Rams with a strong all-around game, providing 19 kills, 22 digs and six aces on the evening. The junior hitting at a .302 clip in the five-set match. Freshman Carly Whitham also had a strong defensive performance, pulling out 11 digs for Bluefield.

In the nightcap, BC bounced back with a straight-set victory over hosts West Virginia Tech. The Golden Bears had defeated BSC earlier in the evening, 3-0, but Bluefield edged out WVU-Tech 25-22 in the opener before taking healthy 25-15 wins in the final two sets for the sweep.

Morrow once again paced BC in the second game, leading the offense with 11 kills. Lexie Austin and Lexie Mocarski weren't far behind though, providing seven and six kills, respectively, in the win. Whitham led the team in digs with six and also provided three service aces, while Austin also had a pair of blocks for the Lady Rams' defense.

Bluefield held a .310 hitting percentage for the match against WVU-Tech, including a stellar .583 percentage in the second set.

Bluefield returns to the court next Wednesday, once again heading north to West Virginia. They are slated to take on UC-Beckley at 7 p.m. Bluefield makes its 2014 home debut on September 11, hosting Concord University at 7 p.m. in the Dome Gymnasium.
