BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Bluefield University volleyball team closed Appalachian Athletic Conference play over the weekend with a home split, defeating Bryan College 3–1 Friday night before falling to Tennessee Wesleyan in straight sets on Saturday at the Dome Gymnasium.
Game One: Bluefield 3, Bryan 1 (25–22, 15–25, 25–20, 25–22)
The Rams started the weekend strong, earning their 11th win of the season behind a balanced effort across the board. BU hit .118 as a team and recorded 12 service aces while limiting Bryan's offense to just .084 hitting. Ella Gawellek paced the attack with 17 kills and 18 total points, while Rachel Sasson and Abbey Boehm each tallied nine kills. Morgan Wigg added nine kills and a team-high four total blocks, and setter Izabella Lechuga guided the offense with 21 assists and three aces. Libero Eledy Torres led the defensive effort with 21 digs, and Sienna Vitelli added 13 digs and five aces. The Rams closed the match by taking two of the final three sets with timely serving and steady play at the net.
Game Two: Tennessee Wesleyan 3, Bluefield 0 (25–19, 25–20, 25–19)
In Saturday's finale, Bluefield battled throughout but came up short against a strong Tennessee Wesleyan squad. Sasson once again led the offense with eight kills and four block assists, while Wigg added seven kills and Gawellek chipped in five. Lechuga totaled 16 assists, and Torres anchored the defense with 15 digs. The Rams fought back from early deficits in each set but couldn't overcome the Bulldogs' efficient .250 team hitting.
With the weekend results, BU moved to 11–11 overall and 7–10 in AAC play.
The Rams will celebrate Senior Night November 3, with an open scrimmage at 6:30 p.m. inside the Dome Gymnasium.
