BLUEFIELD, Va. -- Visiting Union College managed to pull away from Bluefield late in a pair of sets en route to the 3-0 sweep, 25-17, 25-18, 25-20, Friday night at the Dome Gymnasium in Appalalchian Athletic Conference voleyball action.
Bluefield (1-9, 0-4 AAC) hung closely with the Bulldogs (11-5, 3-1 AAC) in the first and third sets, but strong closing runs by Union lifted the visitors to the 3-0 win.
The Lady Rams came out of the gates slowly, as Union took a quick 5-1 lead and forced a timeout by Head Coach
Jim Butski. Bluefield bounced back, though, pulling withing 8-7 before Union used another spurt to open a 12-7 advantage. Another rally from BC clawed the squad back and squared the match at 13-13. The teams had another tie at 15-15, but the visitors reeled off a 10-2 run to close the set and take a 1-0 lead.
In the second, Union raced out to a 10-4 advantage, this time placing BC in a hole it could not climb out of. The cushion for the Bulldogs remained steady around five points for the majority of the match, closing out set two, 25-18.
BC spotted Union another quick start in the third as the first three points went on the visitor's side of the scoreboard. The Lady Rams tied it at 4-4, but a 6-1 run by Union opened the gap once again. Bluefield continued to battle back as they have shown time and time again, and pulled within one, 19-18, as the set neared the end. However, another spurt from the visitors, this one being 6-2, closed out the set and the match.
Jasmine Morrow once again paced BC with 13 kills, converting 13 kills on 37 attempts with three errors. The junior also logged 11 digs for the team's defensive efforts.
Ellen Johnson led BC with 17 digs, and also added four kills.
Marissa Grice and
Kaitie Shaver spread the ball around with 10 and eight assists, respectively. Shaver also added 10 digs.
Amber Taylor-Inge continued her quality play at the net, posting three block assists and a pair of solo blocks. Grice also had a hand in a trio of block assists, as BC totaled eight blocks for the match.
Union had an even attack, getting 10, eight and seven kills, respectively, from Julia Edmonds, Rachel Andrews and Marissa Elam. Heather Fields had 17 assists while Chandler Gray added 12 more.
Bella Salazar had 12 digs for the visitors and Ana Calaza added 10 more. Andrews also added four block assists, with Union tallying seven blocks in the win.
Both teams recorded their best hitting percentage in the third set, Union at .344 and Bluefield at .250.
Bluefield returns to action Saturday morning at 10 a.m., closing their five-game homestand against Tennessee Wesleyan College (4-9, 2-2 AAC).
