ATHENS, Tenn. -- Oscar Hernandez came up big in net for the Rams on Saturday afternoon, making 13 saves to help Bluefield take a 0-0 tie with Tennessee Wesleyan in Appalachian Athletic Conference men's soccer action.
With the tie in the regular-season finale, the Rams' record moves to 11-6-1 overall and 5-3-1 in AAC games. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs close the year with a 9-6-2 record while also sporting a 5-3-1 mark in conference meetings.
In regulation, the hosting Bulldogs claimed a 16-12 advantage in shots, with Hernandez making seven saves.
The Rams faced a challenge being a man down for the final 11 minutes of regulation and then the 20 minutes of overtime, as freshman
Nikolai Solomon earned his second yellow card of the match in the 79th minute.
After the Rams became shorthanded, the Bulldogs recorded the last seven shots over the final 11 minutes of regulation. Hernandez saved the two on-frame shots, while the others were off-target.
The Bulldogs' attack continued to benefit from the extra man in the bonus time, taking three shots in the first overtime and six more in the final 10 minutes. Hernandez collected saves on every on-frame attempt, two in the first and four in the second to total 13 on the night.
After outshooting the hosts 11-9 in the second half, Bluefield managed just three total in the two extra periods, with just one
Benjy Slator attempt forcing a save.
For the game, TWC held a 25-15 edge in shots, with a 13-5 advantage in shots on goal.
BC had four corner kicks to five from the hosts.
The shutout is Hernandez' fourth in seven appearances this season, and the Rams' record eighth of the year.
Bluefield and Tennessee Wesleyan will square off once again next Saturday in the quarterfinals of the AAC Tournament.
