BLUEFIELD, Va. --Â Coming off its bye week and back-to-back road wins, the Rams football team is set for Saturday's challenge of welcoming the No. 5 Georgetown College Tigers to Mitchell Stadium, Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
Â
The Matchup
As an annual top-25 program, the Tigers have held a decided upper hand against the Rams in their first two meetings. During BC's return season, Georgetown took a 77-9 win at Mitchell Stadium. Last season, the Tigers claimed a 49-7 victory in Kentucky.
Scouting the Tigers
Georgetown is led by two-time MSC Offensive Player of the Week Neal Pawsat. The quarterback leads the NAIA's No. 5 scoring offense per game with 1733 passing yards this season. Pawsat has tossed for 17 touchdowns, completing 127-of-227 attempts with just three INTs.
The run game is led by Demonte Smith's 375 rushing yards, coming on 76 attempts as he averages 53.6 yards per game.
The stingy defense, which ranks 7th in scoring defense per game (16.0 ppg), is led by Max Neussbaum's 43 tackles. He is one of seven defenders with at least five tackles for a loss this season. Tommy Campbell has 8.5 sacks on the year, and 12 tackles for loss in all. The team is No. 1 total sacks at 33.
Somethings Gotta Give
The Rams/Tigers game presents a matchup between the NAIA's No. 3 team in rushing offense per game in Bluefield and the NAIA's No. 7 team in rushing defense per game.
Bluefield has averaged 329.6 yards per game on the ground, while the Tigers have only allowed 97.3 rushing yards per game.
Record Breaking Performance
The Rams' modern-era record book was rewritten with the team's 68-56 win at Union, Oct. 18. Bluefield ran the ball on 81 of its 95 plays, rushing for 643 yards and totaling 763 yards of total offense.
Sam Bennett (276) and
Adrian Pope (225) provided the 1-2 punch on the ground, as they each broke 200 yards in the game on career nights.
Join the 1K Club
In BC's win at Union,
Sam Bennett became the second Ram to amass 1,000 rushing yards for his career, joining
Marion Harris. The club should get another member this week, as
Adrian Pope's 225 yards at Union moved his career total to 999.
Harris reached the milestone in his 19th career  game, while Bennett did so in his 16th. Pope will be playing in the 19th game of his career, Saturday.
Move those Chains
The Rams always developing offense ranks No. 5 in the NAIA in first downs per game at 25.6. The fast-paced game the Rams operate has led BC to 205 first downs this season, compared to 186 for its opponents.Â
Â
Furious in the First
The first quarter has been the Rams' best offensive period this season, scoring 100 points in games' opening quarters--second best is the fourth quarter at 65 points. The Rams have tallied 21-point first quarters in both of their last two games.
Opening Drive Success
The Rams have scored on their opening drive in five of this season's eight games, with four of those scores being touchdowns.Â
Three-Headed Attack
The Rams' running back trio of
Sam Bennett (715),
Marion Harris (512) and
Adrian Pope (511), accounting for 65% (1738/2637) of the Rams' total run game this season. The Rams are the only NAIA program with three running backs with over 500 rushing yards.
Fight for Fourth-Straight
Sam Bennett's attempt at a fourth-straight 100-yard rushing game will be a challenge as opponents average just 97 yards on the ground per game against the Tigers.
Georgetown's highest allowed rushing total for a single back this season is 80, by Kentucky Christian's Jamuel Jones.
The Tigers last allowed a 100-yard rushing performance in last season's playoff loss to Carroll (Mont.), as Dustin Rinker totaled 115 yards.
