PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- The Bluefield College men's soccer team dropped its second overtime contest of the season, Tuesday, as former conference opponent Shawnee State University clawed back for a 3-2 double overtime win over the Rams.
Bluefield's record drops to 8-4 on the season with the defeat, while the Bears' mark moves to 3-9-2.
The Rams earned a 2-0 lead in the first half behind goals from
Michael Callaghan (19') and
Dean Johnson (29'), and held a 12-7 edge in shots through the opening 45 minutes of action.
But, the Bears flipped momentum quickly in the second half, scoring a pair of goals just two minutes apart (48' & 50') to knot the match, 2-2.
Neither team could break the tie in the remaining 40 minutes of regulation, but the Rams became vulnerable as
Matthew Carragher was given his second yellow card of the game in the 62nd minute, forcing BC to play a man down.
The Bears took advantage of BC playing without one of its key defenders and closed the second half with a 12-7 advantage in shots. Senior keeper
Jefferson Watson helped advance the game into extra-time though, as he made five second half saves.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Bears wasted little time in finding the net in the second session, as Martyn Sayer scored in the 102nd minute to lift Shawnee State to a 3-2 win.
The Bears finished with a 24-19 advantage in shots, and had 14 on frame compared to eight for the Rams. Watson closed the evening with 11 saves between the pipes for Bluefield. Bear keeper Brandon Pfeifer logged six saves.
Shawnee State had 10 corner kicks to just three for BC, while the Bears were called for 13 fouls to six for the Rams. The game also had six yellow cards assessed, three for each team.
Bluefield returns to action Thursday in what is now a neutral-site matchup in Charleston, W. Va., against Ohio Christian University. The teams will play at Schoenbaum Stadium. Game time has also been altered, with the men playing at 4 p.m., following the women's matchup at 2 p.m.
