PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Freshman
Forrest Yates found the back of the net just over a minute into Wednesday night's Mid-South Conference matchup and the visiting Rams never looked back, taking a 5-1 victory over the University of Pikeville.
Both teams now sport the same record, 3-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
UPike threatened to even the match several minutes later, as they rattled off four shots in a span of less than two minutes. One shot caromed off the crossbar, one was off target and two were saved by BC keeper
Jefferson Watson.
Bluefield posted its second tally of the night in the 37
th minute.
Adam Hern recorded his second goal of the season, converting an assist from
Jacob Mader. Mader also assisted Yates' goal and is tied for the team lead with four assists this season.
UPike struck quickly in the second half, with Cooper Gaypia scoring less than two minutes into action.
Mader then scored a goal of his own in the 59
th minute to push the Rams' cushion back to two scores, 3-1.
James Gunn extended the Rams' lead and earned Andres Palacios an assist in the 72
nd minute, while
Matthew Plucinski converted on a Gunn pass to tack on the final score in the 89
th minute of play.
Bluefield outshot UPike 16-13—with 10 of those shots coming in the second half—but held a considerable advantage in shots on goal, 10-4.
The Bears earned five corner kick opportunities compared to two for BC.
A total of 38 fouls were called during the game, 18 for Bluefield to 20 for the Bears. UPike was also handed three yellow cards and one red card on the night.
BC's Watson made three saves on the night in 90 minutes of action.
Bluefield returns to the East River Soccer Complex on Friday evening, stepping out of conference once again to host Columbia International. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
