Knights clip Rams in OT

Box Score

BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – For the second time this season, the Rams dropped a hard-fought contest in overtime as the St. Andrews University Knights stole a 3-2 overtime victory at the East River Soccer Complex.

The Knights (2-3) needed a late goal to force the overtime period, with Laurin Michaelis knocking in a header from Edwin Mwangi with just 12 seconds remaining in regulation.

Caio Lima then secured the game winner with 1:07 remaining in the first overtime period. Lima snuck into the box as Breno Calegari made his initial pass toward the goal, and Caio Liberatti made the final connection with Lima for the clinching score.

St. Andrews grabbed a 1-0 lead late in the first half thanks to a Brandon Milliken goal with 7:50 remaining in the first half.

However, the Rams (2-3) responded less than a minute later, as Erik Albarran picked off an errant pass in the visitors' defensive end and capitalized on the misplayed ball to square the game, 1-1.

In the second half, both teams continued to fire shots, but the tie would not be broken until the 86th minute, with Jack Jemison giving Bluefield a 2-1 edge. Coming after a short inserted corner kick, Jacob Mader found Jemison for the score which came from the left side of the box.

Michaelis' goal came in the aftermath of a free kick of the Knights, just inside of midfield. After the ball was pushed away from the goal but not cleared, Mwangi made one last serve into the box for Michaelis' game-tying header.

The visiting Knights posted 22 shots on the evening, with nine being on target. Bluefield made 15 shots in the game, but couldn't get any in the overtime period, compared to four from St. Andrews. The Rams had six shots on goal.

Both keepers logged the entire 98:53, with BC's Jefferson Watson making six saves and St. Andrews' Leandro Custodio making four saves.

Bluefield held a 10-5 advantage in corners, while both teams were whistled for 11 fouls.

The Rams will now trek to Georgetown this weekend, facing the Tigers at 5 p.m., Saturday. It is their first Mid-South Conference game of the season.
