FERRUM, Va. -- Despite grabbing a 3-2 advantage in the second half, the Bluefield College men's soccer team dropped Friday evening's contest to host Ferrum College, 4-3 in double overtime.
Ferrum's Aaron Gustine recorded his second marker of the night, 2:10 into the second overtime to give the Panthers the home victory.
The loss levels the Rams' record at 1-1, while Ferrum opens its 2013 season with a 1-0 mark.
Jacob Mader gave the Rams a 1-0 lead nearly four minutes into the game, scoring on an assist from freshman
Junior Espinoza. The assist marks Espinoza's third in two games for Bluefield.
The Panthers didn't post their first shot of the evening until the 25
th minute of game action, with senior keeper
Jefferson Watson making the first of his five saves on the evening.
Ferrum jumped on the scoreboard in the 32
nd minute with Gustine's first goal of the night, assisted by Andres Juarez.
Approximately two minutes later, the Panthers claimed their first lead of the evening, as Cristian Turcios found the back of the net on a direct kick.
The Rams had a pair of corner kicks late in the opening half, but could not convert on the opportunities.
Bluefield struck early again in the second half, with
Adam Hern converting the goal under three minutes into play.
Michael Callaghan earned the assist with the crossing pass, helping tie the game, 2-2.
Hern struck once again in the 70
th minute of action, giving Bluefield a 3-2 advantage.
However, with less than six minutes to go, Ferrum's Andres Juarez squared the game once again, being assisted by Abass Osman.
Bluefield earned four corners and posted three shots in the waning minutes of the contest, but would not find the back of the net as the game was forced into extra time.
Both teams only managed one shot in the first 10-minute overtime frame, but Gustine's shot just over two minutes into the second overtime sealed the victory for Ferrum.
The Rams return to the field Saturday evening at the East River Soccer Complex for their first home contest of the year. Gametime is slated for 6 p.m.
