BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – The Rams fell 87-77 Tuesday night at the Ned Shott Gymnasium, as Bluefield State College used a 50-point second half and a 55-42 edge in rebounds to claim the Battle of the Bluefields in its home gym. The win for the Blues snaps at least a 10 game win streak for the Rams in the series, according to dating back to the 2003-04 season.
Kearsten Marion led Bluefield with 21 points, with
Ederson Exume adding 12 more. Five other Rams added at least six points in the defeat.
Eric Dukes led the squad with eight rebounds.
The Blues were paced by Treon Claiborne's 18 points. Remar Brothers added 15, while Shakir Dunning and Geron Tate tossed in 14 points apiece. Tate also ripped down a game high 10 rebounds.
The teams battled back and forth in the early stages of the game, as the lead changed hands six times in the first half. The Rams faced a 24-18 deficit with 7:31 remaining in the first half, before exploding on a 20-4 run to grab a 38-28 advantage with 2:21 to play.
Mike Collins knocked down a corner three as BC regained the lead, 25-24. Exume scored eight of his points during the stretch, while the run was capped by a dunk from
Devin Page, in which the junior received a technical for hanging on the rim.
The Blues outscored BC 9-6 over the remaining 2:20, giving the Rams a 44-37 lead at intermission.
However, the hosts shot 50% (18-for-36) in the second half en route to 50 points over the final 20 minutes. They also added 11 free throws in the second half, and attempted 40 shots from the charity stripe on the evening. The Rams recorded 29 personal fouls on the night, to just 16 for BSC.
The Rams do not play again until Nov. 21, when they begin Mid-South Conference play. They first face Campbellsville University, and then St. Catharine College on Nov. 23, both on the road.
