BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – A first half goal from
Matthew Plucinski served as the difference maker for the Rams Wednesday night, as the Bluefield College men's soccer team defeated non-conference opponent Montreat College, 1-0.
Â
A Cavalier foul near the right sideline set up Bluefield's scoring scenario. A served ball toward the goal was headed back to the top of the box, with
Hector Comacho's shot initial shot being blocked. Plucinski came up with the rebound, beating Montreat goalkeeper, Lucas Carvalho.
Â
It is the Rams' (7-6) first-ever win against Montreat (7-6-1), based on records dating back to 2004.
Â
The Rams came close to pushing the advantage to 2-0 shortly after, as freshman
Forrest Yates had a shot attempt hit the post.
Erik Albarran put another quick shot, but was wide of the target.
Â
The Cavaliers had several opportunities of their own, including one with less than 12 minutes to go in the opening half, where Benjamin Lloyd fired a shot off the crossbar.
Â
Bluefield outshot Montreat 10-7 in the first half.
Â
Bluefield recorded three shots in the first 13 minutes of the second half, but only had one more in the final 32 minutes of play.
Â
The visitors nearly tied the game with 10:29 to play, but an offside call negated the Cavaliers' apparent goal.
Â
Montreat took six shots in the second half, including three in a three-minute span with less than 10 minutes to go in regulation. One attempt was wide, while BC's
Jefferson Watson made saves on the other two shots.
Â
Bluefield was able to close out the final few minutes by sending Montreat attacks back across midfield.
Jacob Mader then put a shot on goal following a Montreat foul with less than two minutes to play, which set up a BC corner kick.
Â
An offside call on the Rams gave the visitors one more chance, as their keeper came to serve the ball from just outside of midfield. Bluefield sent the ball away to clinch the win as time expired.
Â
Bluefield finished with a slim 14-13 margin in shots, while both teams only managed four to be on target. Watson saved all four shots for the Rams en route to his second straight shutout, and the third straight game in which the Rams have not allowed a goal.
Â
The men's and women's soccer teams will celebrate Senior Day for their next contests, which come on Sunday. Both programs host Mid-South Conference opponent St. Catharine. The women play at 2 p.m. and the men at 4 p.m.
