Soccer teams fall at Cumberland

LEBANON, Tenn. – The Bluefield College soccer teams dropped their Saturday contests to hosting Cumberland University. The women fell to the No. 8 ranked Bulldogs, 5-0, while the men were outscored 5-1.

Women

Cumberland defended its home field on Senior Day and completed its Mid-South Conference schedule unbeaten at 9-0 with its 5-0 win over the Lady Rams. The victory clinches the regular season conference title for the Bulldogs' squad.

Bluefield was only able to post one shot on the afternoon, as the Bulldogs' offense fired off 32 shots, with 15 being on frame. BC's Kayla Richardson made seven saves for the day.

Bluefield held the Bulldogs scoreless for the opening 30 minutes of action. CU then broke the scoreless tie with less than 15 minutes before the half, converting on a set play off a corner kick.

While the first half ended 1-0 in favor of the hosts, CU continued its attack in the second half and was able to add four more tallies en route to the 5-0 win.

BC's women's team will play hit the road one more time for the regular season, as they travel to face Hollins University at 4 p.m., Thursday.

Men

Playing its final regular season road game, the BC men's squad fell by a score of 5-1.

CU wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, placing the ball in the back of the net just 1:26 into the game.

The hosts added one more in the 34th minute to grab a 2-0 advantage which they took into the half.

Through the opening 45 minutes, Bluefield was outshot by a slim 8-6 margin, but Cumberland heightened its attack in the final half by outshooting the Rams 14-6.

The Bulldogs' advantage grew to 3-0 following a header goal from Harry Mason in the 59th minute.

Michael Callaghan put the Rams on the scoreboard in the 76th minute, taking advantage of a CU foul in the box and scoring on a penalty kick. The goal is Callaghan's fourth of the season and second off a penalty kick.

Less than two minutes later, the Bulldogs extended its lead back to three goals as Luke Wilson scored his second of the evening.

One final goal from CU in the 84th minute brought the score to its final tally of 5-1.

BC's men finish up their regular season schedule next Saturday, hosting Lindsey Wilson College at 2 p.m.
