Women's Game
Bluefield's offense broke through for its strongest Mid-South Conference showing of the season, taking a 4-1 win over the University of the Cumberlands. The team opened up a three-goal lead at the half and tacked on one more marker in the second, before Cumberlands added its sole goal late in the game.
The Lady Rams' third straight win lifts their 2013 mark to 8-5-1, 2-4-1 MSC. It also clinches a NCCAA Mid-East Regional berth, as they are guaranteed a end-of-season record of .500 or better.
Pip Pattison gave BC a 1-0 lead at the 19:01 mark, tallying her fourth goal of the year.
Whitney Browning scored both the Rams second (22') and fourth (66') goals, upping her team-leading total to nine on the season.
Jessica Newman elevated BC's lead to 3-0 in the 28th minute of play, sending home a rebounded shot from Tori Doyle.
Kayla Richardson made nine saves for BC, allowing the Patriots' one goal in the 76th minute. Cumberlands split its keeper time, with Autumn Williams giving up three goals in the first half and Carissa Harriman allowing one in the second half.
Bluefield was outshot 13-12, but both teams recorded 10 shots on goal.
Men's Game
Bluefield's five game unbeaten streak was busted, as Cumberlands went on to a 4-1 win.
The hosts broke out to a 3-0 first half lead, behind scores in the 9th, 21st and 33rd minutes.
The Rams got on the scoreboard in the 73rd minute of action, with
James Gunn tallying the goal. Gunn has now tallied at least a point in his last four games.
Cumberlands outshot BC 23-9 on the afternoon, including holding a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Both soccer teams return to action on Oct. 26, traveling to face Cumberland University.
