After a challenging weekend at the University of the Cumberlands tournament, the Bluefield University women's volleyball team was eager to turn things around. The Rams, feeling the sting of their previous results, faced off against Carolina University with a renewed determination.
The match began with the Rams struggling to find their rhythm, and Carolina University took full advantage. The first set saw Carolina leading with a commanding score of 22-7. Despite the deficit, Bluefield rallied to narrow the gap, eventually losing the set 25-15. This hard-fought comeback ignited a spark within the Rams.
Coach
Buddy Gallemore acknowledged the difficulties faced early in the match: "I think the environment got to us in the first set. It was our first true road match, the gym was loud, Carolina came out hot, and it affected us. We were making a lot of errors." However, he also noted the team's resilience: "Then we started to play better late in the first, but we were too far behind. In the second and third sets, we attacked better and got our service game going. In the fourth set, both teams battled and we made a couple more plays to pull it out."
Energized by their late first-set performance, Bluefield stormed back to dominate the remaining three sets. The Rams showcased their resilience and skill, securing a 3-1 victory in the match.
Joslyn Evans continued her stellar season, leading the team with 12 kills and a .455 hitting percentage, while also contributing 4 blocks.
Liangelys Santana was a force on all fronts, adding 11 kills, 5 service aces, and 6 digs to the team's efforts.
Nayerly Jimenez played a crucial role in setting up plays with 21 assists, along with 2 service aces and 5 digs.
The Rams now have a well-deserved weekend off before returning to action for their home opener against Milligan University on September 12th. The team looks forward to building on this momentum and showcasing their skills in front of their home crowd.
