Women's volleyball takes bite out of Bulldogs

BLUEFIELD – Women's Volleyball hosted its final game of the extended season Saturday night and defeated the Union College Bulldogs in four sets in the last game before the AAC Tournament.
After a four-all tie Union went on a 6-2 run and the Rams called time. After the timeout BC rallied. They came within a point on Claire Fingerlin's ace and later tied the set at 13. Morgan Coulter's ace put the Rams on top and Jessica Wells' kill gave BC a two-point lead 16-14 at which time Union called time. Reese Turner's kill put Bluefield up by three, their largest lead of the set. A pair of kills by Coulter gave the Rams a 24-19 lead and the Rams took the opening set on a return by Leslie Flores. Rams won the first set 25-19.
In set two the Rams scored five unanswered to build a 9-4 lead, thanks to the play of Wells and Flores. Union responded and closed to within two, forcing Bluefield to call time. Out of the break Bluefield continued to hold the lead with Union getting as close as three, 21-18. Turner's kill made it 23-19 and the Rams won the set 25-20 on Wells' kill.
Fingerlin opened the third set with an ace and the Rams scored the first two points of the set. Union rallied to tie at five and took the lead after being down 4-1. Union pushed ahead 10-7, their largest lead at that point in the match. The middle portion of the set remained close as Union held between a one to three-point lead. Stephanie Reitzloff tied things at 18 with a kill and Bluefield reclaimed the lead 19-18. Union took a late 23-22 lead. BC rallied to tie at 24 but Union took the set 26-24 to force a fourth set.
Union led early but Bluefield scored four straight points to take an 8-5 lead in the fourth. The BC lead fluctuated between one and three points until Union tied the set at 13. Kassidy Brown's ace pushed the BC lead back to two. Back-to-back aces by Wells gave the Rams a 20-16 lead. The Rams won 25-20 to take the set and match.
"It's always good to get a win going into the conference tournament, especially against the No. 4 team in the conference," said Rams head coach Buddy Gallemore. "I think we are playing well. We worked hard tonight. These girls wanted this match. It's been a while since we have beaten Union and the girls really wanted it. They worked hard for it tonight."
Aubri Whatcott had a career high 57 assists along with18 digs. Flores had 23 kills and 22 digs. Wells had 20 kills. Coulter had 29 digs and Fingerlin 19.
