Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Rams shut out Brenau

BLUEFIELD - Women's volleyball got back on the winning track with a 3-0 win over Brenau University, Saturday morning at the Dome, 25-17, 25-23, 25-21.
Playing its second match in 15 hours, the Rams came out hot, taking a 2-0 early lead in the first set only to see the Tigers take a 3-2 advantage. Ties followed at five and seven before Bluefield College moved ahead by three, 11-8, forcing Brenau to call time. After the timeout BC scored three unanswered points, the last coming on a massive kill by Leslie Flores. The Rams continued to grow its lead and went ahead by eight 20-12 on a kill by Jessica Wells. Friday night against Truett McConnell, Wells tied the school's single-game record for kills when she had 30. Brenau went on a 4-1 run to draw closer, but Katie Kendrick's kill ended the set 25-17 in favor of Bluefield.
The second set was nip-and-tuck throughout. The game was tied at each of the first 13 points and neither team had a lead larger than a point until Kendrick's kill gave BC a 115-13 lead. The Rams moved ahead by three on several occasions and then to five at 21-16. The Tigers rallied and tied the match at 23, but Bluefield scored the final two points, the set winner on a Flores kill.
In the third set a pair of kills by Wells and an ace by Morgan Coulter gave Bluefield a 3-0 lead. The Rams maintained that advantage until Brenau knotted the set at seven. The teams exchanged the lead several times before Bluefield pulled ahead late, 22-16, its biggest lead of the set. Again Brenau rallied, but it was not enough as the Rams took the match 25-21 on a Flores kill.
"I thought it might be a little difficult. It showed a little bit of character we had today, coming into this morning after a tough loss last (Friday) night and a long night," said Rams head coach Buddy Gallemore. "We showed a lot of guts and a lot of character, playing well and coming in with a sweep does us good. That's the first sweep we've had. We're glad to get it and now we've just got to keep moving on and go to next week."
Flores paced the Rams with 13 kills, 10 digs and a block. Wells had 10 kills and three blocks. Aubri Whatcott had 33 assists and Claire Fingerlin had a team-high 15 digs.
