Box Score 2 The Bluefield College softball team swept a two game series against Montreat College in Appalachain Athletic Conference play on Wednesday afternoon. The Rams won both games by scores of 4-1 and 5-0 over the Cavaliers.
In game one,
Baily Garin was in complete control of the game from the pitcher's circle. She gave up only one run from five hits over seven innings of work, struck out six, and did not allow a walk. Her offense provided enough run support for that to do the job. In the bottom of the second inning,
Morgan Sawyers, Garin and
Alexandra Bartley all singled to load the bases with no outs.
Morgan Stephens then doubled to right center field to clear the bases and pick up 3 RBIs. The fourth and final run the Rams would score would come in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Kaitlyn Pennington blasted a solo homerun over the right center fence into the wind.
Michaela Carter, Bartley, and Stephens all finished the game 2-3 at the plate.
In game two, the Rams would be the only team scoring runs. Bartley got the win from the mound as she and
Brienna Sparks combined to throw a two-hitter over seven innings. The Rams scored one run in the bottom of the second on a wild throw from the Cavalier defense. In the bottom of the fourth, Sawyers singled to right but advanced to third on the misplayed ball in right field, and then scored on Garin's grounder. In the fifth,
Eryn Haley singled, advanced to third on Carter's double, and scored on a sacrifice fly from
Kristen Murphy. The Rams final two runs came in the bottom of the sixth. Garin reached on an error, Stephens reached on a fielder's choice, and Sparks bunted for a single to load the bases. Pennington singled to right to pick up a RBI and Haley followed up with a single of her own to pick up the final RBI of the game. Haley and Carter finished 2-4 and Sawyers finished 2-3 on the game.
The two wins make the Rams 13-25 overall and 3-15 in AAC play. The Rams will travel to South Carolina on Saturday to face Columbia College, the last conference game of the season. Game times are set for 1:00 and 3:00.
