Shelby Key's put-back with 13.6 seconds put the Bluefield College Rams ahead and
Maryah Mazyck's bucket at the buzzer provided the final margin of victory as the BC women defeated the Montreat Cavaliers 60-57, Monday night at the Dome Gymnasium.
Bluefield rolled out to an early lead and held a 16-point advantage in the opening half before the visiting Cavaliers pecked their way back into the contest and took their first lead with 8:45 to play in the game. The Rams, 62-51 winners Saturday at Truett-McConnell, were determined to remain perfect in 2016 and never gave up as the teams battled and exchanged the lead nine times in the final eight minutes of action.
Bluefield came out hot and led 10-7 after one quarter. In the second stanza the Rams continued their hot play and carried a 29-19 lead into the half. Bluefield's defense was key in the first half as they held Montreat to 29 percent shooting while connecting themselves on 43 percent of their shots.
The tide changed in the second half as Montreat out-scored bluefield 22-13 in the third quarter and Bluefield led by a single point, 42-41 headed into the fourth quarter.
With seconds left to play and Montreat ahead 57-56, Key's put-back gave Bluefield the lead. Mazyck then stole the ball with seconds remaining and drove the court for a layup at the buzzer to seal the victory.
Mazyck topped the Bluefield scoring column with 16 points and
Monique Robson added 13. Key finished with nine point, four assists and three steals. Mazyck also had four assists. Robson had a team-high six rebounds, as Bluefield was beaten on the boards 40-28 by Montreat.
Shannon Jackson led the Cavaliers with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Niroshka Perez had 12 points with nine boards.
The Rams are now 7-6, 3-4 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference and return to action Wednesday night at St. Andrews. Montreat falls to 6-8 overall and 3-4 in the AAC.
