Rams Start Strong but Fall to Clinton College, 64–44, in Home Opener

BLUEFIELD, Va. (November 3, 2026) – The Bluefield University women's basketball team opened its 2026–27 home schedule Tuesday evening at the Dome Gymnasium, falling to unbeaten Clinton College, 64–44, despite a competitive first half and strong contributions from the Rams' bench.
Playing in front of a near capacity crowd, Bluefield (0–2) jumped out to an early advantage and held a 17–16 lead after the opening quarter. However, Clinton College (4–0) used a strong second half and a decisive advantage on the glass to pull away for the victory.
The Rams were led offensively by Aaniyah Custis and Hannah Smith, who each finished with seven points. Custis connected on three of her four field goal attempts and added three rebounds and two steals, while Smith contributed a three-pointer and two rebounds.
Maddie Day and Zoey Snavely added five points apiece, while Lauren Bragg anchored Bluefield's rebounding effort with a game-high 10 boards.

Bluefield came out with energy in the opening period, using defensive pressure and timely shooting to establish an early lead.
After trading baskets in the opening minutes, Day connected on a three-pointer with 6:14 remaining to give the Rams an 8–3 advantage, their largest lead of the evening.
Clinton responded with a run to even the score at 13, but Bluefield continued to battle. A basket from Katelyn Norman put the Rams ahead 15–13 with 33 seconds remaining before Clinton briefly reclaimed the lead on a three-pointer from Yonique Bell.
Hannah Smith answered with a jumper in the closing seconds, sending Bluefield into the second quarter holding a 17–16 advantage.

Third-Quarter Struggles Prove Costly
The turning point came in the third quarter as Bluefield struggled to find an offensive rhythm.
The Rams were limited to eight points in the period, connecting on just three of 19 field goal attempts. Clinton capitalized, outscoring Bluefield 17–8 to extend its advantage to 47–34 entering the final quarter.
Hannah Smith provided five of Bluefield's eight third-quarter points, while Custis added the remaining three.
