Rams grab pair of wins in NCCAA World Series play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MASON, Ohio -- The Bluefield College baseball team picked up a pair of key wins on Thursday, as the pool play portion of the NCCAA World Series continued at Prasco Park and Legacy Field.

The Rams began the day with a 6-3 win over top-seeded Oklahoma Christian as pitcher Ryan Shockey tossed the complete game, before picking up an 11-inning, 5-4 win over No. 8 seed Trinity Christian thanks to a Sawyer McLamb RBI single in the top half of the inning. Bluefield is now 2-1 and will conclude pool play on Friday with an 8 p.m. matchup against No. 9 seed Shorter University.

Bluefield 6, Oklahoma Christian 3
Jacob Wright and Chris McCollister tallied two RBI apiece and McLamb added another as BC defeated Oklahoma Christian. Wright and McCollister were the only Rams with multi-hit games.

Bluefield outhit the Eagles 8-3 as Shockey (9-4) logged the complete game.

After OCU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning, BC came back with three runs in the bottom half. Jacob Schober kicked things off with an infield single, and advanced to third two batters later thanks to a McLamb double.

A McCollister single scored both runs to earn BC the 2-1 lead, while McCollister was able to score on a multi-error play.

The Rams tacked on two more in the 3rd as Tyler Lundgren and Tyler Timmer were walked back-to-back to open the frame. Lundgren was forced out at third on a fielder's choice, but a Wright double brought Timmer across the plate and advanced Schober--who reached of the FC--to third.

A McLamb groundout did the job to score Schober and earn BC a 5-1 lead.

OCU tallied its second run in the 5th after leading off with a triple. But, the Rams got it right back as Wright went yard over the left field fence.

The Eagles talled their final run in the seventh, and Shockey concluded the game with two perfect innings to clinch the 6-3 win.

Bluefield 5, Trinity Christian 4 (11 inn.)
Trinity Christian built a 3-0 lead through five innings, but the Rams came back late with a pair of runs in both the 7th and 9th innings to force extras, then McLamb provided what would be the game winning RBI single in the top of the 11th.

Head Coach Mike White utilized three pitchers in the game, with Kaleb Houchins going 4 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Dylan Cole then provided 3 1/3 innings of relief and allowed just one run on five hits. Cory Niten closed the final 3 innings, allowing three hits and striking out three to claim the win.

Trailing 3-0, Bluefield cut its deficit to one in the 7th. McLamb and Daniel Copeland led off the frame with back-to-back singles. Copeland advanced to third on a passed ball, then scored on  a Villines single. An error by the left fielder also allowed McLamb to score and advanced Villines to second.

Trinity responded with a single run in the bottom half, as a lead off single paid off for the Trolls.

BC was held to just a hit in the 8th, while Trinity went down in order and was held to its 4-2 edge.

McCollister led off the 9th with a single, but was forced out on a fielder's choice. Zac Russell-Myers walked to place runners on first and second, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. A walk to Lundgren loaded the bases, setting the stage for another clutch hit from Timmer. The San Diego, Calif., native singled to drive in both Russell-Myers and Villines to square the game at 4-4. A fly out and pop out to the infield halted the Rams' threat to take the 9th inning lead.

Trinity's leadoff man reached on an error, but catcher Lundgren fired a strike to Timmer at second to catch the runner stealing. After a fly out, back-to-back singles placed a runner in scoring position, but Niten closed the door with a strikeout.

BC loaded the bases thanks to a single, walk and error with two outs in the 10th, but couldn't capitalize.

The Trolls placed two on, one with a single and one via error in the 10th, but also couldn't come through with the timely hit. Niten provided a strikeout to end the frame.

A one-out double from Schober was followed by a single from Wright to place runners on first and third. McLamb provided the third-straight hit, scoring Schober to give the Rams a 5-4 lead. Wright was tagged out at third trying to steal, while a groundout completed the inning.

Niten got the Trolls leadoff man to ground out to Timmer at short, and after a walk the Rams turned the 6-4-3 double play for the extra-inning win.
