A total of 14 Bluefield errors led to 13 unearned runs for the visiting Golden Bears Wednesday afternoon, as West Virginia Tech swept the Lady Rams with wins of 5-3 and 14-1.
BC falls to 7-25 on the year with the pair of losses, while the Golden Bears leapt above .500 to 14-12 with the sweep.
Game 1: West Virginia Tech 5, Bluefield 3
The visitors got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
Bluefield took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, plating a pair of runs.
Kasey Holcomb reached on a single, while
Jessica Dutka earned a one-out walk. With two out, the duo scored on a dropped flyball struck by
Aline Uehara, to take the lead, 2-1.
WVT struck back quickly with three runs in the sixth. A leadoff triple from Jacki Wood began the inning, as Blythe came in on a sacrifice fly. With the bases loaded, Uehara walked a pair of Golden Bears to give the visitors a 4-2 advantage.
After plating one more run in the seventh, starting pitcher Wood held the Lady Rams to one run in the final inning to earn the victory, 5-3.
Game 2: West Virginia Tech 14, Bluefield 1 (5 innings)
WVT got on the board quickly, plating two runs in the opening frame thanks to a Katie Campbell solo homerun and a Genna Trippett double which drove in Wood.
The Lady Rams looked to rally in the bottom half of the inning. A Uehara single drove in Dutka, but a line-out double play ended the threat with runners on first and second.
The Golden Bears broke the game open in the third, scoring five runs. A pair of BC errors allowed the inning to continue.
WVT tacked on six more in the fourth to gain a 13-1 edge, with six runs coming with two out. BC starting pitcher
Megan Meismer exited the game during the inning after getting hit in the face with a comebacker. After being attended to on the field, Meismer walked off the field under her own strength.
The Golden Bears tacked on one final run in the fifth, en route to the 14-1 win.
