Softball Splits Home Opening Doubleheader

After falling 12-5 in game one versus Emory and Henry, the Lady Rams posted a 6-5 victory in game two to split their home opening doubleheader on Friday afternoon.

Megan Meismer earned the win for Bluefield in game two, pitching the entire seven innings. Bluefield reclaimed the lead after a four-run fourth inning and held on for the 6-5 victory. Madison Fielder drove in two in the inning, while Jessica Dutka added two more with a two-run home run.

Game 1: Emory & Henry 12, Bluefield 5

The visiting Wasps earned a healthy lead quickly, scoring six runs in the opening frame. Hannah Bays provided a crushing blow, hitting a grand slam to left field.

Bluefield posted its first run in the bottom of the third when Breanne Vencil led off with a solo shot to straight-away center.

The Wasps tacked on two more in the sixth and closed with four more runs in the seventh.

Bluefield managed to score four runs in their final chance at bat, but Emory & Henry's lead was too much to overcome. Vencil drove in one run in the seventh, while a Kristen Hylton double plated three runs for the Rams.

Vencil was the lone Lady Ram with a pair of hits in the opener, as she went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and scored two runs.

Aline Uehara took the loss for Bluefield, giving up the opening six runs of the ballgame. Katie Grimm earned the victory for the visitors.

Game 2: Bluefield 6, Emory & Henry 5

The Wasps once again grabbed the early lead, this time only plating one run in the first inning.

Bluefield quickly answered back, however, as Dutka led off with a single. Following a Hilton sacrifice bunt, Morgan Stephens brought Dutka around to score on a single of her own then advanced on the defensive throw to the plate. Heather Thomas slapped another single up the middle to move Stephens to third base. A Vencil groundout drove in Stephens and gave Bluefield the lead, 2-1.

The lead was short lived as Emory & Henry squared the game 2-2 in the next inning.

After a couple of scoreless innings, the Lady Rams took their largest lead of the afternoon on four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Vencil opened with a double to left field and moved to third on a Kourtney McGrady single. Fielder hit a ball to deep center field, scoring both Vencil and McGrady and giving Bluefield a 4-2 lead. With two outs, Dutka cleared the fence for the second time this season, giving the Lady Rams a 6-2 advantage.

A two-run home run from Taylor Doss in the sixth inning cut Bluefield's lead to 6-4, while a one-out solo shot from Cortney Halsey in the seventh slimmed the advantage to one, 6-5. However, a ground out and a fly out concluded the game and gave the Lady Rams their first home victory of the year.

Dutka, Stephens and Vencil led Bluefield with two hits apiece. Dutka and Fielder provided two RBIs each in addition to one from Stephens.

Meismer's victory came despite giving up 16 hits to the Emory & Henry lineup. Bluefield had 10 hits on the afternoon en route to the victory, handing Brandy Bryant the loss.

Bluefield is slated to host St. Catharine (Ky.) tomorrow for its first Mid-South Conference home game. Game one is tentatively scheduled for 11:30 a.m., due to the predicted forecast.
