A seven-run fourth inning in both games of Bluefield softball's season-opening doubleheader led to a pair of victories over Covenant, 11-0 and 10-9, Friday evening. The pair of night games kicked off the 2013 season for both programs, with the contests taking place at Warner Park in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Aline Uehara earned the five-inning complete game win in the opener, striking out five. Megan Meismer pitched five and two-thirds innings for the victory in the night cap and struck out four. Uehara pitched the final inning and a third to earn the save.

The Rams' 21 combined runs is the most scored by the team in a doubleheader since the 2010 season, when they plated 25 total runs against Alice Lloyd College (Apr. 16). Meanwhile, the Rams' 33 combined hits are the most hits on record in a doubleheader, dating back to the 2004 season.

Game One: Bluefield 11, Covenant 0 (5 innings)

After plating a run in the first inning and two more in the third inning, the Rams exploded for seven runs in the top half of the fourth. Bluefield tallied nine hits in the inning and scored seven runs.

Kourtney McGrady began the rally with a single then came around to score on a Breanne Vencil double to right field. Later in the inning, a Morgan Stephens double drove in Kasey Holcomb and Jessica Dutka for the fourth and fifth scores of the frame. Uehara and Vencil drove in the final two runs of the rally en route to the five-inning win.

Stephens led the Rams, hitting 3-for4 with four RBIs. All three of Stephens' hits were doubles. Uehara added three RBIs to help her own cause, while Vencil brought in two runs.

Game Two: Bluefield 10, Covenant 9

Bluefield once again scored runs in the first and third innings of game two, before jumping ahead 10-2 behind another seven-run rally in the fourth inning.

The Rams had nine hits once again, with six of the hits being for multiple bases. Dutka brought in the inning's first two runs on a triple to right field. Another Stephens double plated two runs later in the inning, while Meismer also had a two RBI swing, doubling to center field.

Covenant answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, making the score 10-4. The Scots plated three more runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. However, the Rams held Covenant scoreless in their final at-bats to complete the sweep.

Uehara went 4-for-4 in game two and scored two runs. McGrady and Stephens each plated three runners, while Dutka and Meismer had two RBIs apiece.

Saturday, Bluefield and Bryan had to endure less than ideal playing conditions as temperatures dropped into the 30s in Dayton, Tenn.

Game 1: Bluefield 1, Bryan 9 (5 innings)

In game one, the Lions jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first inning. The posted their sole run of the game in the fourth frame on a solo homerun from Uehara.

Bryan tacked on one run in the bottom of the fourth inning and wrapped up the game in the bottom of the fifth inning by adding three more runs, winning 9-1.

Uehara (1-1) was credited with the loss and Shanna Chappell earned the victory for the hosts.

Game 2: Bryan 8, Bluefield 0 (5 innings)

The Rams struggled to get their bats going once again in game two. Dutka reached on a double while Thomas contributed a single for BC's only hits.

Bryan scored a pair of runs in the first inning and added another in the second. The Lions upped their advantage in the third by plating four more runs, then scored one more in the bottom of the fourth inning to win by run rule, 8-0, after BC went scoreless in the top of the fifth.

Meismer (1-1) was credited with the loss while the Lions' Sarah Hundley earned the win.

The Rams will visit Chattanooga, Tenn., once again this weekend as they play two games against Tennessee Temple, Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
