CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Facing a tough test in its first Mid-South Conference game of the 2013 season, the Bluefield College women's basketball team fell 88-55 at No. 6 Campbellsville University's Powell Athletic Center on Thursday evening.
First half turnovers dug BC (3-2, 0-1) into a hole, while the Lady Tigers' (5-0, 1-0) offense began to fire on all cylinders during the final 20 minutes of play.
The Lady Rams were led by
Janee Simmons' 11 points.
Destiny Tolliver followed with 10 points, while
Teqa McNeal and
Monique Robson each added nine. Simmons led the Lady Rams rebounding effort with seven and also added four assists for the all-around game.
Varying forms of a halfcourt press caused troubles for BC early. Campbellsville looked to run off BC's miscues and raced out to a 13-2 lead, which forced an early timeout from interim head coach Jessica Brokaw.
The hosting Lady Tigers continued the pressure and gained a 26-7 advantage at the first media timeout thanks to 11 BC giveaways.
While CU was held scoreless over the next 5:20, BC only put four points on the board to cut the deficit to 26-11 with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half.
Whitney Smith knocked down a three-pointer, while
Teqa McNeal added a free throw.
Bluefield settled in over the closing minutes of the first half and outscored the Lady Tigers, 12-11 in the last seven minutes to trail 37-23 at intermission. Smith and
Asia Wheeler led the Lady Rams with five points apiece, with Wheeler also pulling down five first half rebounds.
The Lady Rams committed 18 turnovers over the first 20 minutes, leading to 15 CU points.
While BC was much more poised on the offensive end in the second half, so were the Lady Tigers. CU continued with a strong inside presence, while also knocking down shots from long range in the second half.
The Lady Tigers shot 19-for-36 in the second half, going 6-for-11 from beyond the arc. The second half shooting performance lifted their game total to 33-for-73 (45.2%).
Three Lady Tigers tallied double digits, led by Mary Jehlik's 19 points. Lindsey Burd ripped down 11 rebounds for the hosts.
Bluefield continues its Mid-South Conference opening weekend on Saturday, facing St. Catharine College at 2 p.m.
