SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Bluefield University softball team opened the 2026 season Thursday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader against WVU Tech at Little Creek Park.
The Rams begin the season at 1-1.
Game One: Bluefield 10 – WVU Tech 1
BU wasted no time getting on the board in the opener, scoring two runs in the first inning before pulling away late in a 10–1 victory.
The Rams plated three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to put the game out of reach, finishing with 11 hits on the afternoon.
Delana Loflin led the offense with three hits and three runs scored, while Mackenzie Hood delivered a big performance with a double and four RBIs. Kenidy Harris added a two-run single in the first inning, and Chloe Dillow tripled and drove in a run as part of the balanced attack.
In the circle, Isabella Smith was dominant in her season debut, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing no hits and striking out 10 to earn the win. Sara Lang worked the final inning in relief as BU limited WVU Tech to just one hit in the game.
Game Two: WVU Tech 14 – Bluefield 13
The nightcap turned into an offensive battle, with BU jumping out to an early 6–0 lead before WVU Tech answered with seven runs in the second inning.
Bluefield continued to respond throughout the game, posting 13 runs on 11 hits. Dillow highlighted the effort with a three-run home run in the first inning and finished with four RBIs. Harris reached base five times, scoring four runs, and Olivia Bailey added two hits and two RBIs.
BU carried a 13–11 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but WVU Tech used a pair of doubles in the final frame to walk off with the 14–13 win.
The Rams return to action Saturday with a doubleheader against Rio Grande beginning at 1 p.m. in South Charleston, W.Va.
