SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Bluefield University softball team dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader against Rio Grande.
Game One: Rio Grande 10 – Bluefield 0
Rio Grande scored in each of the first five innings and limited BU to three hits in a 10–0 decision in the opener.
Delana Loflin, Kenidy Harris and Natalee Victores accounted for Bluefield's three hits, with Loflin swiping a base in the first inning. The Rams had an early opportunity after putting two runners on in the opening frame but were unable to break through.
In the circle, Isabella Smith worked 3.2 innings, while Sara Lang finished the final 1.1 frames in relief. Rio Grande totaled 10 hits and used a pair of multi-run innings to create separation.
Game Two: Rio Grande 17 – Bluefield 4
The nightcap saw Rio Grande jump out to an early lead with five runs in the first and two more in the second before adding 10 runs in the third inning.
BU responded with a two-run third inning. Loflin doubled and drove in a run, and Harris followed with an RBI single to put the Rams on the board. Harris continued her strong day at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs in game two.
Bluefield added two more runs in the fifth inning when Harris delivered a two-run double to center field, bringing home Loflin and Victores.
Alexis McDuffie, Katie Barrett, Lang and Mackenzie Hood combined in the circle for the Rams, with Hood tossing three scoreless innings in relief to close the game.
With the losses, BU moves to 1-3 on the season.
The Rams return to action Thursday with a doubleheader at Carolina University beginning at 1 p.m.
