Bluefield, VA – The Bluefield University Rams made a bold statement in their first conference match-up of the season, sweeping Carolina University 3-0. With dominant play across the board, the Rams showed why they're a team to watch this season.
Right from the opening set, Bluefield came out strong, taking control early and securing a 25-18 win. They only got stronger from there, crushing the second set 25-10 and putting the match away with a decisive 25-12 victory in the third.
Several players stepped up in a big way. Mason Lloyd and Dakari Williams led the charge with 9 kills each, while General Smith was right behind them with 7 kills and an impressive .545 hitting percentage. Defensively, Kyle Pietrzak and Richard Cisneros were brick walls at the net, blocking 4 attacks each and shutting down Carolina's offense. In the back row, Colby Mutter led the team with 10 digs, while Lloyd, Williams, and Cesar Bitanga chipped in with 3 digs apiece.
The Rams were also lethal from the service line. Benedict Somes fired off 3 aces to keep Carolina on its heels, while Pietrzak and Lloyd each added 2 of their own. Somes and Nate Gooden orchestrated the offense beautifully, setting up their teammates for crucial kills and keeping the Rams' attack unpredictable.
