BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Bluefield University volleyball team closed out a strong week of Appalachian Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 sweep of Columbia International University Friday night inside The Dome Gymnasium.
The Rams rolled to set wins of 25–8, 25–20, and 25–23 to improve to 7-4 overall and 3-4 in the AAC, while finishing the week with a perfect 3-0 record.
Bluefield set the tone early in the opening frame, hitting .476 as a team and putting together its most efficient offensive set of the season. Rachel Sasson and Morgan Wigg delivered kills at the net while Eledy Torres steadied the defense in the back row. The Rams limited Columbia to just four kills in the set on a -.167 attack percentage and sprinted away with a 25–8 victory.
The second set was more competitive, with five ties and four lead changes, but Bluefield found its rhythm midway through. Sasson and Chesed Russell combined for key points while setter Katie Voss spread the offense effectively, helping the Rams hold off a late Columbia push for a 25–20 win.
Columbia fought hard in the third, capitalizing on BU errors to keep the score tight. The teams battled through three ties and two lead changes, but Bluefield's balance proved decisive. Sasson, Wigg, and Ella Gawellek chipped in timely kills, and the Rams sealed the sweep with a 25–23 decision.
Sasson paced BUÂ with seven kills on .375 hitting, while Wigg matched her with seven kills and added solid net play. Russell also tallied seven kills, and Gawellek contributed three kills with a .286 hitting percentage. Voss directed the offense with 12 assists and four digs, while Izabella Lechuga added 14 assists and six digs. At the service line, the Rams were dangerous all night, with Torres notching three aces, Sienna Vitelli serving six, and Devry Lausch and Gawellek adding one each. Torres led the defense with 14 digs, while Vitelli added nine from the back row.
The Rams return to action October 10, when they travel to face Brenau University in AAC play. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
