WALESKA, Ga. – The Bluefield University volleyball team wrapped up a two-match Appalachian Athletic Conference road swing in Georgia this weekend, facing Brenau University on Friday and Reinhardt University on Saturday.
Friday, Oct. 10 – Brenau 3, Bluefield 1 (25–16, 11–25, 25–15, 25–18)
Bluefield came out determined against a strong Brenau squad, responding to a first-set loss with one of its best offensive stretches of the season in set two. The Rams hit an impressive .542 in the frame, powered by balanced attacks from Rachel Sasson, Abbey Boehm, and Chesed Russell, to cruise to a 25–11 win and even the match.
However, Brenau regrouped in the third and fourth sets, using consistent serving and net play to regain control. Bluefield showed resilience with several long rallies and defensive stops, but Brenau closed the final two frames 25–15 and 25–18 to take the match.
Russell and Morgan Wigg led Bluefield with nine kills apiece, while Sasson and Sydney James each added nine of their own in a balanced attack. Boehm posted eight kills and a block assist, while Ella Gawellek contributed four kills and steady defense. Setter Katie Voss tallied 22 assists and 10 digs for a double-double, and libero Eledy Torres anchored the back row with 14 digs.
Saturday, Oct. 11 – Reinhardt 3, Bluefield 0 (25–14, 25–20, 25–19)
The Rams faced a quick turnaround Saturday morning against first-place Reinhardt in Waleska. Bluefield battled throughout but was unable to overcome the Eagles' efficient hitting and blocking at the net.
After falling in the opening set 25–14, Bluefield found its footing in the second, keeping pace behind kills from Rachel Sasson and Chesed Russell. The Rams cut the deficit to three late before Reinhardt pulled away for a 25–20 win. In the third, Bluefield traded points early but could not sustain momentum, as the Eagles completed the sweep with a 25–19 decision.
Sasson and Russell led the Rams with five kills each, while Abbey Boehm added three and Wigg contributed defensively with four block assists. Torres and Sienna Vitelli combined for 16 digs, while Kylee Sturgill and Eledy Torres each served multiple aces.
Bluefield now stands at 7-6Â overall and 3-6 in AAC play.
The Rams return home to The Dome Gymnasium October 14 to host Pikeville University with first serve scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
