Softball gets first ever win over Truett McConnell

BLUEFIELD – Bluefield College scored five runs in the sixth inning to erase a 4-0 deficit and gain its first ever softball win over Truett McConnell University in the second game of Monday's doubleheader at Graham Rec Park.
The Bears took a 3-0 lead in the third, chasing Rams starting pitcher Taylor Nunn. TMU added a run off reliever Madison Koonce in the fourth to go ahead 4-0.
Bluefield came alive in the sixth inning. Kristina Sanchez singled to left and Lexi Harmon doubled to put runners on second and third. Chloe Hicks singled to score Sanchez and Harmon moved to third after which Hannah Taylor came in as a pinch runner. Laken Sparks walked to load the bases. Emma Crawford hit into a fielder's choice that scored Taylor and moved runners to second and third. Jocilyn Thompson then reached when all hands were safe on a fielder's choice to third. Claudia Santana hit a grounder to short, but the throw sailed over first base. Two runs scored to knot the game at four with Thompson moving to third and Santana to second. Lauryn Bailey then singled to score Thompson and give BC the lead 5-4.
In the seventh Koonce gave up a one-out single, but then two ground ball outs enabled the Rams to claim their first ever softball win over one of the AAC's premier programs.
Koonce, closing her second game of the day, picked up the win in the circle. She pitched four-and-a-third innings, allowed one run on four hits.
Truett McConnell out-hit Bluefield 10-6. Bailey and Harmon each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
"We are growing and getting better and one big part of that is the mental aspect. Our kids are like, if we can just keep the game close, we've got to continue to fight, because there is a chance. I just want to tell you, this was huge for our program, it's huge for our kids," said Bluefield head coach Sam White.
"Sometimes you get tired of getting a pat on the back for a moral victory. This is something special because we fought. We had some family here, we had some kids playing hurt today and for us to come back and not lay down, they had plenty of opportunities to give up today, but they just kept fighting and it goes beyond wins and losses. It's a big maturity step for our team and our program."
With the win the Rams improved to 14-14 overall and 8-12 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
