Women's basketball holds off Allen

BLUEFIELD – A strong fourth quarter lifted women's basketball to a 69-67 come-from-behind win over the Allen University Yellow Jackets in AAC basketball action Thursday night at the Dome Gymnasium.
Allen controlled play the first quarter, setting the tempo and holding the lead throughout. The Rams closed to within two points on several instances but the visitors held the lead at the first quarter buzzer 19-15.
The Rams tied at 22 on Courtney Kendrick's layup with 8:00 to play in the second quarter, but Allen moved back ahead by five over the next two minutes. Late in the quarter the Rams charged back, cut into the Yellow Jackets' lead and made it a four-point game with just over 90 seconds before halftime. Allen held a 32-26 lead at the break.
Tianna Crockett's trey at the 6:30 mark of the third made it a two-point game, 36-34 game and moments later got to within a point of the lead at 38-37 and later tied the contest at 40. BC took its first lead at 43-42 on a Danae Cox bucket with just over three minutes to play in the third. Allen led 50-47 as the fourth quarter started.
The Rams tied it at 50 just a minute into the final quarter on a three-point play the old-fashioned way by Cierra Cook. BC took its first lead with 8:00 to play on a Cox baseline floater. Cox's three gave the Rams a five-point lead midway through the quarter.
Bluefield moved to its largest lead with 2:37 remaining in the game when two technical fouls were assessed on Allen coach Akia Stanton. She was already assessed one earlier in the game and the three meant her ejection from the contest. After the ensuing free throws BC held a 63-54 lead.
Allen fought back and with 48.5 left  AU's Afeni Richardson made it a three-point game. Allen closed to within two in the final minute, but the Rams held on for the win.
Kendrick had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Cierra Cook and Cox each had 12 points.
