Rams women advance to semifinals with win over Point

Box Score

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Shelby Key's basket with 2.6 seconds in the game lifted the Bluefield College women's basketball team past the Point Skyhawks 46-44, Thursday afternoon in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals at the MeadowView Marriott Conference Resort and Convention Center.

With the Rams up three with the clock winding down, Point's Dereese Owens, the AAC Player of the Year, hit a three to tie the game. Bluefield threw the ball inbounds to Key who drove the court and made the off-balance shot. A Point desperation shot at the buzzer was not close.

Early in the game it was the Skyhawks who took the early lead, up by as many as nine in the first half but Bluefield rallied back and at halftime it was a 21-17 point advantage. The Rams led 35-32 after three and the fourth quarter was full of theatrics that came down to Key's shot that won the game.

Maryah Mazyck led the Rams with 13 points and three blocks. Key finished with 11 points and Monique Robson had nine rebounds.

Alexia Manning led Point and all scorers with 19 points. Owens dropped in 10.

Bluefield (19-10) will next play Montreat, Friday evening at 6 p.m. in the conference semifinals. Montreat advanced after defeated No. 1 seed Milligan, Thursday afternoon.
