BLUEFIELD, Va. -- The Bluefield College women's basketball team avenged an early season loss, Sunday, knocking off West Virginia Tech, 76-62 at the Dome Gymnasium in non-conference action.
Bluefield (11-15) wrapped up its out-of-conference schedule with the victory, and has three games remaining in the regular season. Head Coach
Corey Mullins' squad was led by an 18-point, 14-rebound effort from
Destiny Tolliver, as the senior recorded her 10th double-double of the year.
Shelby Key chipped in 15 more in the victory, while
Whitney Smith had an all-round game with 10 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
A 14-5 run from Bluefield earned the squad some early separation, turning a five-all tie into a 19-10 lead with 9:48 remaining in the opening half.
LaKisha Adkins then provided a spark off the bench for the visitors, as she scored eight-straight for WVU-Tech and helped the team pull back within three, 23-20.
After another triple from Adkins cut BC's lead to just two, Bluefield responded with a 7-0 rally. Key knocked down a jumper before
Tempestt Lewis dialed one up from long range. Free throws from
Maryah Mazyck and Tolliver once again made the lead nine, 35-26.
Adkins hit her fourth trey of the opening half with 49 ticks left, but Mazyck answered with a hoop, then Tolliver converted following a BC steal and made it a 39-29 lead at the half.
Bluefield scored six-straight out of the break, only to see WVU-Tech clamor back with a 7-0 rally and pull within five, 41-36.
A Tolliver hoop halted the run, and sparked a 12-5 response for the hosts.
WVU-Tech brought it back to single digits multiple times, but Bluefield was able to fend off any real threat and took the 76-62 victory.
Bluefield's performance at the free throw line helped the squad hold on, as the team went 8-for-11 over the final 2:30 and knocked down 21-of-29 (72%) attempts on the day. Meanwhile, the Golden Bears were just 12-for-24 at the line.
BC outshot the guests 41% to 30%, while WVU-Tech had 12 more shots for the afternoon.
Bluefield held a 55-38 margin on the glass, leading to a 17-7 edge in second-chance points and a 28-18 advantage in points in the paint.
The team returns to the road on Wednesday, traveling to face Truett-McConnell College at 5:30 p.m. Bluefield currently sits in seventh place in the league at 7-10. Truett-McConnell is 2-14, and in 10th place. The Lady Rams knocked off the Bears, 61-44, on Jan. 3 at the Dome.
