Box Score 2 LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Facing another tough challenge on the road, the Bluefield College softball dropped both games of its Saturday doubleheader to (RV) Georgia Gwinnett, 10-1 and 16-6.
Bluefield falls to 0-4 with the losses. Georgia Gwinnett moves to 4-0. The Grizzlies began their 2015 slate with a pair of wins over Bluefield's Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent and No. 3 ranked Reinhardt.
Game 1Laura Craven kept Georgia Gwinnett's high-powered offense at bay through the opening innings, with the Grizzlies holding a 2-0 lead through four innings of play.
Craven then led off the fourth with a double, and later scored on a
Kasey Holcomb sacrifice bunt which trimmed the lead to 2-1.
The hosts began to find the offense in the bottom of the frame though, and tallied three runs on four hits.
Brienna Sparks entered the circle in relief  and was able to strike out two Grizzlies with two on to get out of the inning.
However, Georgia Gwinnett tacked on five runs in the sixth, thanks in part to a pair of BC errors, and took the 10-1 win.
Tianna Macies logged a pair of hits, going 2-for-3 at the dish.
Eryn Haley added a single for the Rams' fourth hit of the game.
Game 2Bluefield was able to score first in the finale, but three big innings from the hosts pushed Georgia Gwinnett to the 16-6 win in five innings.
Haley led off the game with a single. After advancing on a sacrifice and a wild pitch, Haley came home on a single from Macies.
Michaela Carter tossed a scoreless first inning, but the Grizzlies came back with five runs in the second inning--two of which were credited to Carter.
A four-run third extended the lead to 9-1, before BC plated four runs in the fourth.
Kaitlyn Pennington and Macies provided back-to-back singles to lead off the frame, before
Kristen Murphy reached on a walk to load the bases with no outs.
Victoria Pietsch singled to score two.
Back-to-back fielders' choices plated two more runs for BC, while GGC also had a pair of errors.
With the lead trimmed to 9-5, the Grizzlies placed a seven on the scoreboard, doing so on four hits and getting help with a pair of BC errors.
Pennington reached on a walk in the fifth. After advancing on a wild pitch and a ground out, the freshman came home on a passed ball for the final score in the 16-6 ballgame.
Macies logged two more hits, with Haley and Pietsch providing BC's other two in the finale.
Bluefield is scheduled to host Emory & Henry on Wednesday in its home opener. Stay tuned to BCRams.com for any schedule changes.
