Friday evening, the Bluefield College men's volleyball team turned the tables against the Eagles on Saturday morning, claiming the program's first-ever victory in a thrilling five-set match, 18-25, 15-25, 25-23, 26-24, 17-15.
The day continued with a neutral-site match with North Greenville University defeating Cincinnati Christian in five sets, before the Rams fell to North Greenville in three sets in the final match, 19-25, 13-25, 18-25.
The Rams fell behind quickly to the visiting Eagles by dropping the first two sets. However, BC showed its resiliency by fighting back in the third. The teams battled toe-to-toe early in the set, before Bluefield reeled off three-straight for a 14-11 lead. After a CCU attack error,
Matt Epperson tallied an ace and
Isaiah Williams put down a kill.
Bluefield upped its lead to 20-15, but the Eagles didn't go down easy, battling back for ties at 21 and 22 points. Another CCU error, followed by an ace from
Daniel Williams gave BC a 24-22 edge and a kill from
Daniel Griffin earned BC the 25-23 set win after a CCU kill.
The teams continued to contest each other tightly in the fourth, but Bluefield was once again able to come up with the points late in the set. The teams faced ties at 23 and 24 as they traded points, but a kill from
Connor Holland followed by an attack error for the Eagles helped square the match, 2-2.
The fifth set was no different, as there were 11 ties in the first-to-15 set. BC earned a two-point edge, 13-11, after a Holland kill and a CCU error, but the Eagles fought back again to square it at 14-all. A third-straigt point for the visitors gave them a match point attempt, but a kill by
David Gianesin squared it at 15.
Daniel Griffin's service clipped the net and fell in for an ace, while another error from CCU gave BC the 17-15 win in the final set.
Bluefield was led by nine kills apiece from Holland and Gianesin, while
Daniel Williams added eight as well for the balanced attack.
Isaiah Williams logged 27 assists, while the Rams claimed 10 blocks, including three solo from
Chase Craycraft. Griffin and
Patrick Hilton logged 16 and 11 digs, respectively in the victory.
Logan Webber posted 19 kills, followed by 12 from Phillip Andrews and 11 more by Ben Leatherman.
Against North Greenville, the Crusaders were able to piece together lengthy runs to down the Rams in three sets, while the Rams couldn't overcome errors as they did against Cincinnati Christian.
Epperson led the Rams against NGU, recording seven kills, followed by six from Holland.
Daniel Williams had three block assists and one solo block to lead the Rams at the net.
NGU was led by Matthew McManaway's nine kills, while Martin Alcox added eight. The Crusaders tallied double-digit kills in each set, registering a .202 hitting percentage for the game, compared to just .035 for the Rams.
Bluefield now hits the road, facing Milligan College on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
