Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

BC falls to Wofford in exhibition matchup

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Bluefield College women's basketball team dropped its Monday evening matchup with Wofford College at the Benjamin Johnson Arena, as the hosts claimed the 69-45 win, outscoring BC by a 35-20 margin over the final 20 minutes. The contest against the NCAA Division I program served as an exhibition for Bluefield.

Bluefield was led by 10 points from Shelby Key. Destiny Tolliver added eight points, while also ripping down 10 rebounds and tallying six blocks while playing with foul trouble. Tolliver has totaled at least five blocks in each of her last six games. Brooke Wolford chipped in seven points, going 3-for-4 from the field with a three-pointer.

Wofford was paced by Maria Corella's career-high 22 points, 19 of which came in the first half to help Wofford to a 34-25 lead at intermission. Bluefield held the Terriers' top two scorers--Jordan Frazier (17.4 ppg) and Kentra Washington (8.7 ppg)--to just three points apiece, combining to shoot 2-for-17 from the floor.

The host's size and pressure eventually wore on Bluefield, with Wofford taking the rebounding edge 59-38 and forcing Bluefield to match its season high with 27 turnovers. The Terriers scored 15 second-chance points and traded in BC's miscues for 23 points.

Both teams got off to a sluggish start, as Wofford held just a 10-5 lead with 11:48 remaining in the first half. The scoring picked up slightly as Wofford pushed the lead to eight on multiple occasions, but Bluefield was able to knock down several shots to keep Wofford within distance. A turnover for BC in the backcourt and one final bucket as the first half's buzzer sounded gave Wofford its biggest lead of the first half, 34-25.

Wofford then built its lead in the second half thanks to a pair of double-figure runs.

Bluefield came out of the locker room with a three-point play from Tolliver, but Wofford responded with a 10-0 rally for a 13-point advantage.

The deficit was trimmed back to single digits, but a 12-0 run from the Terriers later in the half lead to their largest lead of the night at 26 points, 65-41, en route to the 69-45 victory.

Bluefield was held to just 27.7% shooting on the night to the Terriers' 34.1%. Wofford wasn't shy from distance, going 9-for-30 beyond the arc, while Bluefield was 4-for-17 from long range.

While BC struggled with turnovers, the Terriers had 21 of their own, with Bluefield taking 11 steals, led by four from Shelby Key.

Bluefield returns to Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Wednesday evening, hosting Point University at 5:30 p.m.
