BLUEFIELD, Va. -- A 23-12 run in the final 7:33 of game action Wednesday evening pushed visiting Point University to a 61-53 victory over the Bluefield College women's basketball team in Appalachian Athletic Conference play at the Dome Gymnasium.
The loss drops Bluefield to 8-12 on the year and 5-7 in AAC contests. Point moves to 11-8 overall and 8-4 in conference games.
Destiny Tolliver led Bluefield on the night, recording a career-best 22 points. The senior center also corralled 16 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season and 10th of her career. Tolliver went 11-for-13 (84%) from the floor and also added three blocks.
Jade McDaniel and
Maryah Mazyck each chipped in eight points apiece.
Schelbi McKenzie led Point's offensive charge with 18 tallies, while Candace Rhodes and Dereese Owens each tossed in 15 apiece. Rhodes also grabbed 10 rebounds for her own double-double.
Bluefield led for most of the evening, beginning with a 9-0 run out of the gates, as they looked to avenge an early season defeat to the Skyhawks. A 13-2 response from the Skyhawks earned the visitors a 13-11 lead, before the teams exchanged the lead four times and stood tied on five occasions in the first half.
Bluefield flipped a two-point deficit into a six-point advantage, outscoring Point 8-2 in just over two minutes' time. Point added one more hoop to make BC's advantage four at the break, 27-23.
The lead moved up to as many as seven on multiple occasions for Bluefield, with the last coming after a
Whitney Smith three with 13:38 remaining.
Point answered by outscoring BC 10-2 in a four-minute span to retake the lead, 38-37 with 8:41 remaining.
The lead changed hands once again as BC scored four-straight points, but the final 7:33 of play belonged to the Skyhawks as they ramped up the defensive pressure and collected five steals in the final stretch--three of which all came on successive possessions.
The Skyhawks went 5-for-10 from the field in the span, while also getting to the charity stripe for 12 more points en route to the 61-53 win.
BC finished the night 22-for-56 (39.3%) from the field, while Point claimed the win despite going just 17-for-61 (27.9%). Both teams knocked down five threes, with Point doing so on 15 attempts to 28 for Bluefield. While Bluefield was an efficient 4-for-5 at the free throw line, Point went 22-for-25 on the evening.
Point took advantage of BC's 16 turnovers, exchanging them for 21 points.
Bluefield continues AAC play on Saturday, hosting Bryan College at 12 p.m.
