Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Runs in both halves key BC win over Washington Adventist

BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Bluefield College women's basketball team pieced together a 9-0 run in the first half and a 10-0 rally in the second half to earn a 49-37 win over Washington Adventist University, Sunday afternoon at the Dome Gymnasium.

Head Coach Corey Mullins' squad held the Shock scoreless for a stretch of 7:33, spanning over both halves to improve its record to 7-11 on the year. Washington Adventist dropped to 2-10 with the defeat.

Maryah Mazyck logged her seventh-straight double-figure scoring game with a game-high 16 points, including a 6-for-6 effort at the charity stripe. Whitney Smith chipped in 14, knocking down 8-of-10 attempts at the foul line herself. Smith and freshman Adrianne Goodlet each pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Washington Adventist was paced by 12 points from Natalie Harrison, followed by a 10-point, 10-rebound effort from Courtney Jenkins.

The Shock built a 16-8 advantage through the first 9:47 of play, as both teams struggled from the floor. Bluefield found some offense over the final stretch of the opening half, though, beginning with a 9-0 run to grab its first lead, 17-16.

Mazyck tallied the first four points of the stretch, hitting a pair of free throws and a layin. Smith knocked down a trey and Abigayle Peck added a layup to cap the run.

Harrison put the Shock back up by one with a hoop at the 5:35 mark, but that would be the visitors' last basket of the half. Bluefield only added three points the rest of the way, taking a 20-18 lead into the locker room.

The Shock's scoreless drought came to an end with 17:02 remaining in the game, and made the score 22-20 as Mazyck claimed BC's only hoop early in the second half.

A free throw pulled the visitors within two, 27-25, before Bluefield put up six-straight points. Two more buckets came from Peck as the sophomore tallied a career-high eight points on the afternoon, and Mazyck added the last for a 33-25 lead with 10:45 to play.

A Shelby Key triple then ignited a 10-0 BC run as the hosts took control of the game. Smith followed with another three of her own, before the sophomore knocked down four-straight at the line and made it a 45-30 contest with just 4:48 remaining.

BC kept WAU in check the rest of the way en route to the 49-37 win.

The 37 points is a season-low for a BC opponent, and the fewest number of points allowed by the BC women since a 71-31 win over Allen (S.C.), Nov. 29 2012.

While neither team was able to heat it up from the floor—WAU shot 31.1% to BC's 27.8%--Bluefield outscored the visitors at the free-throw line, 15-6.

BC claimed the battle on the boards, 41-35. Nineteen rebounds came on the offensive glass and translated into 14 second-chance points. The Shock had just six second-chance points.

Mullins' team also made the most of the Shock's mishaps, cashing in 22 WAU giveaways for 20 points. BC turned the ball over 14 times, but the Shock only scored four points off turnovers.

Bluefield was efficient with its offense, tallying 11 assists on its 15 field goals

The team now has a slight break, not returning to action until Saturday, trekking to face Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent Columbia College (S.C.). Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
