Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bluefield picks up road win over AAC foe Columbia, 71-63

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Maryah Mazyck and Jade McDaniel each tied career highs by scoring 18 points apiece and Destiny Tolliver ripped down a personal-best 24 rebounds as the Bluefield College women's basketball team defeated Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent Columbia College, 71-63 on Saturday afternoon at Godbold Gym.

Bluefield logged its second-straight win to improve to 8-11 overall and 5-6 in AAC matchups. BC also snapped a four-game skid in road contests. Columbia, who had entered the game with a 6-2 record at its home gymnasium, falls to 8-11 overall and 4-7 in league games.

Columbia started the game with a punch and took as much as an 11-point lead early in the first half, but Bluefield battled back behind a 15-4 rally and took a 28-26 lead into the break.

The second half was close throughout, until Bluefield reeled off a late 12-2 run in just under four minutes' time to grab control of the game and earn the hard-fought road win.

Shelby Key began the rally with a three-pointer from the corner before Mazyck provided the rest of the scoring in the run, starting with a driving basket on the next possession for a quick 5-0 spurt. Mazyck then added the final seven points in the run, including capping the span with an old-fashioned three-point play. The forward snagged an offensive rebound and put it back and was fouled just as the shot clock expired. The rally earned BC a 57-47 edge with 4:36 remaining in the game.

McDaniel provided 11 first-half points for BC and finished the afternoon going 5-for-11 from three-point range. Mazyck tallied eight of her 18 points at the charity stripe, as BC went 13-for-17 at the line on the afternoon.

Whitney Smith chipped in 12 more for the victors, while Key added 11 more points to round out BC's double-figure scorers.

Tolliver grabbed 24 of BC's 46 rebounds, with the team taking a slim 46-44 edge on the glass against the Fighting Koalas. The senior center also tallied six blocks—her season average of 3.8 blocks per game ranks first in NAIA Division II.

Kinsley Hall and BriAna Johnson paced Columbia with 22 and 18 points, respectively.

Bluefield finished the afternoon shooting 25-for-75 (33.3%) from the floor, including an 8-for-19 (42.1%) performance from distance. Columbia was 20-for-67 (29.9%) from the floor, 4-for-16 from three-point range.

The Fighting Koalas forced the inside game to earn their way to the line, finishing the game 19-for-27 from the line.

Bluefield returns to action on Monday evening at 6 p.m. in its sole exhibition matchup of the season, taking on the Southern Conference's Wofford College.
