Tori Doyle tallied an assist against Montreat, ThursdayASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Bluefield took a 1-0 lead in the second minute of play, Thursday evening, but the hosting Lady Cavaliers bounced back with four goals in a 16-minute stretch of the first half to eventually take the 4-2 win in Appalachian Athletic Conference women's soccer action at the Asheville Buncombe City Sports Park.
Whitney Browning provided her first score of the season just 1:30 into play to get BC a quick lead. The Lady Rams also started quickly with a goal in the second minute against Emory & Henry College earlier this week, but the game was declared no contest after continuous lightning in the area.
Montreal, selected to finish second in the AAC this season according to the preseason coaches' poll, leveled the game in the 17th minute thanks to a score by Leah Morris.
The Lady Cavaliers continued to pepper their way to 13 first-half shots, and netted goals in the 27th and 33rd minutes and were also aided by a BC own goal (30') to grab the 4-1 lead at the break.
Bluefield had just five shots at the half, four of which were on frame.
In the second half, Montreat continued to have its opportunities, but BC's offense also gained more chances as they had eight shots over the final 45 minutes of play.
The Lady Rams converted a goal in the 81st minute, as Tori Doyle connected with
Jessica Newman for the score.
However, BC could not mount a late rally and fell by the 4-2 final.
The Lady Cavaliers ended the evening with a 23-13 advantage in shots. BC had 10 shots on goal to Montreat's 15.
Montreat also had the advantage in corners, having six to BC's one. Montreat was whistled for 10 fouls to just five for Bluefield.
Amanda Brown (0-2) made 12 saves on the evening in the loss, while Montreat's Melina Wilkinson (1-2) had eight saves in the win.
Bluefield continues its AAC-laiden early season schedule next Wednesday, hosting St. Andrews College at 3 p.m.
