Women's soccer falls to St. Andrews, 2-0

BLUEFIELD, Va.
– The challenge of early season Appalachian Athletic Conference contests continued for the Bluefield College women's soccer team, as visiting St. Andrews University claimed a 2-0 win over the Lady Rams at the East River Soccer Complex, Wednesday.
 
Bluefield (0-3, 0-3 AAC) was outshot 23-7 by the Knights (2-1, 1-0 AAC) who opened their conference slate with a win.
 
St. Andrews set the tone early, firing four shots in the opening 10 minutes of play, with a pair of those opportunities caroming off the crossbar.
 
Bluefield tallied the next two shots in a seven minute span, but could not convert.
 
The Lady Rams had four corner kicks in less than an eight-minute span, but once again could not turn the opportunities into goals or scoring chances.
 
St. Andrews took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute as Alejandra Bittelman found the back of the net from the right side of the box. Olivia Thoroughman carried the ball into the box from the left side, and a through ball found Bittelman for the goal.
 
The visitors overwhelmed BC in the second half with a 14-2 shot advantage. Freshman Brandi Anderson made several saves, including a leaping save to knock a free kick attempt above the crossbar, to keep the squad within striking distance.
 
But, the Knights grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 78th minute. Bluefield was looking to clear the ball, but Bittelman took possession in open space. A pass forward found Chelsea Seng, who drew Anderson then found the back of the net.
 
Bluefield would not muster a shot the rest of the way as St. Andrews took the 2-0 win.
 
The hosts had just four shots on goal compared to 12 for St. Andrews. Bluefield had the 5-3 edge in corner kicks, but would not take advantage.
 
BC was called for eight fouls to six for St. Andrews.
 
Bluefield returns to action on Saturday evening, hosting Bryan College for another AAC matchup. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
