LIVE STATSMASON, Ohio -- Bluefield College baseball's quest for a second NCCAA World Series title is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday morning at Legacy Field, as the Rams kick off pool play against Fresno Pacific University.
The Rams, who carry the #5 seed in the tournament with a 33-17 record, are in Pool A along with #1 Oklahoma Christian University, #4 Fresno Pacific, #8 Trinity Christian College and #9 Shorter University. Three of the five (OCU, FPU & Shorter) are each transitioning to NCCAA Division II, while Trinity Christian is a fellow NAIA member, competing in the Chicagolands Athletic Conference.
Pool B includes #2 Trevecca Nazarene University, #3 Lee University, #6 Toccoa Falls College, #7 Cedarville University and #10 Lancaster Bible College.
Fresno Pacific (33-19) enters the tournament having won 17 of their last 21 games. The Sunbirds took a pair of games from Azusa Pacific last weekend to earn the NCCAA West Region's automatic qualifier.
The Rams play two games on Wednesday, with the second being the feature game of the night--an 8:00 p.m. matchup against the #1 Oklahoma Christian at Prasco Park. The Eagles have gone through a stunning transformation over the last two years, going from an 8-34 record two years ago to posting a 35-17 record this season. Head Coach Lonny Cobble is in his second year with the program, and quickly began the rebuilding process that took a big step with a 26-26 record in 2013. The Eagles are currently riding an 11-game win streak, including taking all five games en route to the NCCAA Central Region crown.
Bluefield then plays one game of pool play both Thursday and Friday, as teams compete for the top two spots of their respective pools and a spot in Friday evening's semifinals.
The Rams return to Legacy Field on Friday against #8 Trinity Christian, once again having the 10:00 a.m. game. The Trolls represent the NCCAA North Central Region, earning the automatic bid. Trinity Christian posted a 26-20 mark this season, setting a school record for wins in a single season. It is their fifth trip to the NCCAA World Series, but first since the 2007 season.
Bluefield finishes the round-robin portion of the schedule against the #9 Hawks of Shorter, who claimed the NCCAA South Region championship over Toccoa Falls College. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Prasco Park. The Hawks went 15-34 on the year as they continue their transition to the Gulf South Conference.
Should the Rams own one of the top-two records in Pool A, semi-finals are slated for 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Prasco Park. The Pool A winner and Pool B runner up square off in the first game, while the B winner and A runner up will play at 8 p.m.
The title game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday at Prasco Park.
