Second-half run propels BC women to first MSC road win

Box Score

LEBANON, Tenn. – A 15-2 second half run from Bluefield College helped the Lady Rams earn their first road win in Mid-South Conference play this season, defeating Cumberland University 65-60 at Dallas Floyd Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Janee Simmons led Bluefield (11-10, 5-7 MSC) with 19 points, despite foul trouble, hitting 6-of-8 attempts from the floor and 7-of-11 from the free throw line. Teqa McNeal added 14 points, while Asia Wheeler chipped in 10, all coming in the second half. Simmons and Wheeler grabbed a game high eight rebounds apiece as BC held a slim 38-35 margin on the glass.

Katie Smith paced Cumberland (9-12, 5-8) with a game-high 25 points. Smith hit her first six attempts from the field, finishing 9-of-10 from the floor and 7-of-9 at the charity stripe. She was the only Bulldog in double digits on the day.

Bluefield trailed for much of the afternoon, but the 15-2 rally turned an eight-point deficit into a five-point lead with seven minutes remaining. In the four-minute run, Teqa McNeal tallied six points, Asia Wheeler added five and Tempestt Lewis chipped in a layup.

BC pushed its lead to as many as eight points, but six-straight from Cumberland pulled the hosts back within two, 58-56 with two minutes to play. However, the bucket from Smith would be the last field goal of the night for the Bulldogs.

Both teams visited the line often as time wound down, CU converting 4-for-6 and BC 5-of-8 attempts en route to the 65-60 final.

Bluefield finished the game outshooting CU 46.9% to 37.7%.

BC hit 3-of-9 three-point attempts, including two in a short span of time. Whitney Smith knocked down her second trey of the night just after CU had earned its largest lead of the game at 11 points, while Tempestt Lewis hit one just two possessions later to cut the deficit to six. CU also hit three from beyond-the-arc, but took 24 attempts (13%).

Simmons and Katie Smith controlled the first half for each of their respective teams. Simmons tallied 14 of BC's 23 first-half points, while Smith had 16 of her team's 27.

CU eased its lead to double-figures and took its largest lead with 14:32 to play. Smith and Lewis' three-pointers helped trim the lead to six before BC made its move a couple of minutes later.

The Mid-South Conference schedule continues on Thursday, as nationally ranked Georgetown visits the Dome Gymnasium.
