Second-half rally pushes #8 GC over Lady Rams

Box Score

BLUEFIELD, Va. – Bluefield College held strong with No. 8 Georgetown College for 30 minutes on Monday, but a late 10-2 run for the visitors helped them grab the 86-74 win at the Dome Gymnasium.

Bluefield (12-11, 6-8 MSC) placed four scorers in double-figures, led by Teqa McNeal's 15 points. Monique Robson tossed in 12 points while Janee Smimons and Alexis Grant chipped in 11 and 10, respectively. Simmons pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season.

Georgetown's (17-6, 11-4 MSC) trio of Andrea Howard, Kourtney Tyra and Devanny King scored all but 18 of the Lady Tigers' points, led by Howard's 28 and Tyra's 22. The duo combined to shoot 15-for-23 from the floor, including a perfect 7-of-7 from beyond the arc. King's 18 points came on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor.

Howard put the Lady Tigers on her back early, scoring GC's first seven points, while BC had a hot start and earned a 15-7 lead through 5:06.

All five of the Lady Rams' starters scored in the early run, led by four points from both Asia Wheeler and Grant.

Georgetown slowly started to battle back and knotted the contest 30-30 with 5:29 on the clock, after Jessica Foster hit back-to-back jumpers.

But, BC responded with yet another 15-7 run and took a 45-37 lead at intermission. Jade McDaniel and Tempestt Lewis each hit a trey in the rally—and both were 2-for-2 in the opening half from long range—and Simmons put up five to lead the way.

Bluefield scored first in the second half to gather what would be its largest lead of the game, 47-37.

Back-to-back buckets from Grant made it 53-44, BC, but the Lady Tigers then turned it on and reeled off a 26-7 run over the next 10 minutes.

The rally turned a seven-point deficit into a 10-point lead for the visitors and they never looked back the rest of the way. A three from Tyra squared the game at 55, while a layin from Teonia McCune gave GC its first lead, 57-56, since 5-2 less than two minutes into the game.

BC wouldn't pull closer than seven the rest of the way as GC grabbed the 86-74 win.

The Lady Tigers finished the night shooting 56.6% (30-for-53), the best shooting performance against BC this season. Meanwhile, BC was 28-for-63 (44.4%) from the floor. In the second half, GC outshot the Lady Rams 66.7% to 35.5%.

BC was 5-for-10 in the first half from beyond-the-arc, but missed both trifecta attempts in the second half. GC finished the night 7-for-10 from three-point land, also a season-best shooting performance by a BC opponent.

Georgetown outrebounded BC 37-32, despite BC grabbing 17 offensive boards which led to a 20-10 advantage for the hosts in second-chance points.

BC returns to action on Thursday, continuing its Mid-South Conference slate as the season winds down. Bluefield faces University of Rio Grande on Thursday and Shawnee State on Saturday.

BC is currently tied with Pikeville for sixth in the conference standings. However, since the teams split face-to-face this season, the tie breaker would currently go to Pikeville. Going by the teams' record against MSC teams beginning at the top of the standings, the Lady Bears hold a win over Georgetown, who is second in the conference.
