Women's soccer rallies back, defeats E&H in OT

Box Score

EMORY, Va. -- Despite facing a 0-2 deficit to Emory & Henry just 14:20 into the contest, the Bluefield College women's soccer team pulled even in the second half then claimed the come-from-behind, 3-2 victory near the end of the first overtime period Wednesday on the road.

Freshman Whitney Browning netted her fourth goal of the season as the game winner, being fed by Jessica Newman and working past E&H keeper Vicki Fenley.

"We came out really flat and Emory & Henry is a good team that took advantage of it and scored two early goals," head women's soccer coach Tom Price stated. "But, our girls' senior leadership on the team was phenomenal, keeping us in the game. We started pressing and playing a different style. The girls started competing hard and we gained some momentum and started scoring some goals."

Erica Merriman put the hosting Wasps (0-3) up 1-0 in the 10th minute, while Blair Vaughn lifted the score to 2-0 just five minutes later.

Bluefield (2-0) kept E&H in check for the remainder of the first half, then began its comeback quickly after the break

Senior Missy Baines cut the lead to one less than five minutes into the second half, igniting the Rams' offense. After only recording three shots in the first 45 minutes, Bluefield was able to post eight in the second stanza.

Shortly after, in the 59th minute, Ashley Moreno converted a header off a corner kick from Victoria Doyle, knotting the game 2-2.

E&H responded over the final 30 minutes of regulation by outshooting BC 8-4 in the span, but only two were on goal with keeper Kayla Richardson making the saves.

The Wasps fired the first shot in overtime with Richardson securing another save, but BC closed out the game in the 98th minute thanks to Browning's goal.

BC picked up the victory despite being outshot by a 16-14 margin; however, the Rams made more of their shots by having seven shots on goal compared to five for E&H.

Bluefield also held an overwhelming margin in corner kicks, 8-1.

"I'm very proud of the girls' effort and work rate that they put in tonight--to be down 2-0 and not drop their heads was a real testament to the senior leadership, and I look forward to some great things throughout the rest of the season," concluded Price.

The women's soccer team returns to the pitch on Saturday, facing King College in Bristol, Tenn. Gametime is slated for 2 p.m.
